Cons of being gluten-free and bad sides of gluten

To have a change in lifestyle, people have started following a gluten-free diet, they see it as a way of upgrading their health and an easier way to lose some weight. Doctors and food experts would never endorse diets that are gluten-free, as their set of disadvantages and is only meant for people who are gluten intolerant or allergic to wheat.

Insufficient flow of nutrients

Wheat and wheat-based products like bread, cereal, and porridge are enriched with necessary nutrients and vitamins. When someone takes up a gluten-free diet, they do not get enough fiber and other nutrients compared to the ones which have gluten in them. No gluten means depriving yourself of getting vitamin B, folic & amino acids, and also vitamin D, calcium and iron start depleting from the body.  These deficiencies can be covered by picking up food products that come with added vitamins and minerals. Alternatively, one can try and incorporate an everyday vitamin supplement into their diet to protect them from potential damage.

Low-fibre

According to experts, every day a woman has to take 25gms and men have 38gms of fiber intake in their diet. Irrespective of people adding gluten to their diet and people who go gluten-free – they do not consume the amount of fiber that is required for the system to run properly.

Mostly all fiber-rich food items like wheat, rye, and barley contain gluten in them. But nowadays, even items that are gluten-free but contain a good amount of fiber are grown naturally – nuts, fruits, veggies, and grains. Nice gluten-free grains are good sources of fiber and you can grind them on your own to avoid polluting the grains with gluten in some or other form.

Troublesome

Now, that people prefer gluten-free products, restaurants and takeaway shops have started displaying gluten-free menus but it comes with an extra cost. It has an overall awareness that people need to keep that 100% removal of gluten from a diet can be troublesome and needs additional preparation. While you have your office parties, dine out with your friends or even try to grab a snack when you are running late, all these can be challenging for you. If you still wish to traverse through this situation, you would need to inform people who are with you about the new preferences that you have carried for them to plan accordingly.

Overestimation of gluten-free foods

Popularity has seen its peak when you talk about a gluten-free diet and there are food items in every nook and corner shop which sell some of the other products which they call gluten-free. But do you really think that these labels are actually solving the purpose? No, they don’t as one can’t be too sure if the food item has not undergone any kind of contamination and if they are more of a healthy choice for you. These packed products have extra sugar and are too low on fiber content. Just when you see the label which says gluten-free they won’t necessarily be, this can be a misconception while leaving the actual protein and nutrient-packed food can be a bad choice. Choose wisely and choose healthily.
